"Indexing" means that the shifter is setup to move in
increments. It "snaps" into place - and when it does so
your derailleur is setup in such a way that it moves
"perfectly" from one gear to the next.
"friction" means that shifters move smoothly across the
range of shifting and you can adjust the derailleur
manually.
