LOL, I wish I could block by IP, that would be handy. Block sender is
pretty much like "adding to a killfile". It's the simple and quick way.
Some of the fancier newsreaders let you get specific by specifying which
subject to block--you can often use a wildcard to filter out stuff like
"*viagra*" where the "*" can be whatever. You can also killfile by
filtering by the references in the header.
My newsreader (Pan) and many others let you set a "time out" on a low
score (plonking or killing effectively just lowers the score to -9999 and
you choose just to not view low scores, that's how it works) so that if
you're having a spat with "Fred" you can ignore him for 30 days if you
want.
Most of these newsreaders keep the scorefile in a plain text file that can
be edited with a text editor.
A bit complex to be sure, but a little time invested can be well spent
depending on what groups you frequent. Usenet spam varies greatly from
group to group. I'd love to know why. |
