Someone's bound to recommend Paselas, so let me be the first...

They're 26"x1.5", so a bit wider than some pure mtb slicks. There's a
bit of tread so hard packed ground should be just fine. They roll
really nice and fast. Tan sidewalls, though, if that bugs you. Street
price is ~15 bucks.

You can go skinny, but you might have to get a narrower tube. With the
conversion of say 1.95 to 1.5, you sometimes will have tubes that'll
fit without creasing and save a tenner. Test fit with the tube barely
holding air, if the tube creases and folds over itself to fit in the
smaller space, you'll need narrower tubes.
