Last I checked there was no law against wearing pretty much whatever
you want. 
I'm seeing more and more good riders donning at least elbow/forearm and
shin/knee protection on more aggressive xc trails. I use some
shin/knee armor for my rare trips to the ski-lift assisted rides.
