It's a California thing. Like it's just soooo cool to live in a cookie
cutter, pre-fab, assembled by Mexicans, house that is way overpriced.
Houses in my 'Once country' area are going for $300,000 and the real
estate people have no problem finding buyers, many of whom are in
foreclosure within a year or so.
When I do decide to declare myself retired I know I can find houses for
under $20,000 in areas where all the jobs have gone offshore.
