do i need special cranks for my fixed gear bike?

i recently put a fixed wheel on an old 10 speed, and i have enjoyed it, but i think the reverse turning pressure on the cranks has semi-stripped one of the connections where the crank meets the bottom bracket. now it slips all the time. i know there is tremendous force there when i resist the pedals to slow down. am i supposed to have some special one-piece track crank/sprocket thingamajig? my old 10 speed setup is about to give up.
