Absolutely. Once you get used to the idea they are even better for performance on the dirt then on the road. You won't slip off the pedals, you can REALLY power up those steep hills.

I've done road and MTB for a long time and raced both.

EDIT: BTW 95% of all MTB riders I ever see (that's a lot) use clipless. 100% in races. Toe clips are far less safe and way slower to get your foot out of.
