| Sounds like you are not getting a good interface between the connector and the valve.
Presta or Schrader (Car type) ?
Make sure the pump head is configured for the right type of valve.
Let all of the air out of the tyre, and then use your thumb to push the valve as far through the wheel as possible, hold it here while you connect the pump.
