| I understand one problem comes when there is a 'feeder' road joining from the left.
If the cyclist is on the main road, he will have a clear right of way to carry on when a car wants to join from the feeder road.
If the cyclist is on the cycle path, he may well have to stop at the feeder road to avoid traffic joining the main road.
In an urban environment there will be a constant stream of feeder roads joining the main road.
