| If your bike is a mountain bike and geared as such you can only go so fast before you max out on gears and speed. Hybrids are geared a little faster, but still not that much. Some folks get what they call a beater, a road bike that can take the beating of a daily commute and the problems inherent (flats, bent rims, weather, etc.). Most of the time they will pick an older bike made of steel/chromolly and build it up to take the beating. That way you can go faster without trashing a good bike. If you're commuting an MP3 is a bad idea. You have to have your wits about you and there's a good chance you'll be distracted with the mp3.
