does it matter what gear you are in when you're jumping a bicycle?

does it matter what gear you are in when you're jumping a bike? because i noticed that when i'm in gear 1, the derailleur is more down, like an "s". when i'm in gear 8, the derailleur is more up, shaped like a "z".

thanks =)
