i didn't. my sister pushed me down a hill to learn - it was do or die. I tried that method on my younger friends, they got hurt pretty bad - I just ran away - their parents eventually found them.

Wow, some people could seriously get hurt that way, and the "throw your kid into the deep side of the pool at the YMCA to teach him how to swim" is pretty dangerous too, but anyways, yes i grew up with training wheels...and a little horn...and pompoms on the handles. God, sometimes its so hard to believe what you actually used to do! lol

In San Diego, there are service lanes running behind houses of the neighborhood I learned to ride a bike in.
They are narrow and lined with telephone poles, garbage cans and rear access driveways.
I pin-balled down the service lanes trying to avoid the above obstacles without the benefit of training wheels.
