I need a bike overhaul! Need some advice on parts please...?

Basically, my bike is in dire need of some new parts and an hardcore tune up. I need many new parts but I'm a college student on a serious budget, so I'll be getting part by part as I can afford it.

Parts I need first, include new back wheel (tire is fine though), new chain, chain wheel, cranks and brake cables- plus a tune up. Eventually I also would like to get new pedals and brakes (disc if possible for the rims I have at that time).

My first purchase will definitely be a back wheel. I know it is composed of the hub, bearings, spokes, and rim but I'm not sure how much I need. It is really badly bent from jumping off stairs and stuff like that, so whatever I get I want it to be very very strong. I'm also aware that wheels can be very expensive, so I'm willing to spend what it takes as long as its very strong. Any recommended wheels or rims/spokes?

Anyone know of any good website where I could find high quality gear for offroad/MTB bikes (not road or casual biking)..?
