New pedals....?

I just bought some Shimano bike shoes from LL Bean which are kinda mountain bike style, and comapatible with SPD style pedals. My bike is a Trek 7.3 which I use strictly for exercise on road. If I decided to go with a clipless pedal, should I use a road pedal or a mountain bike pedal? I'm afraid to use road style since you can't really use them unless you are wearing cleated shoes, but from what I understand, you can ride a mountain style pedal with or without, right?
