Drive up I-95 (with a short detour on local roads in Delaware to
avoid the toll), remain on the PA side until you cross the Delaware
River. Pick up US Route 1 and head into NY. It'll take longer but
you won't take the entire day, nor a turnpike, nor break an axle. I
don't think you can avoid the bridge toll at the Susquehanna without a
lot of detouring (crossing at Conowingo).
