bike trailer project

hi
i am in my last year of school in britain and as part of my 'A' leve
design project i am going to build and design a cargo trailer for bike
This would only be for road use. I am leaning towards using a 2 whee
design, but as of yet have not decieded on how to attach the trailer t
the bike i have identified 3 possibilites;(if do not know the correc
terminololgy for the parts, please forgive me!

the rear axel; 3 ideas here. a folk style desing that attaches to th
same bolt as the rear wheel. a single bar attaching to the same plac
or the screw holes for a rear pannier rack-my concern with this is tha
it my not be strong enough

the seat post- i fear here that there may be too much strain on th
post during turning to be effecient and it would require a longer ar
to get the COM (center of mass) as low down as possible

the post above the pedels-
the obviouse problem here is that the spars my get in the way of th
user and is also makes it longer

If anyone has had any experience of tailers of has built there own i
would be useful to know of you have any tips of comments on the abov
thanks in advance

Have you looked at the existing bicycle trailers that are out there for
sale?

What Claire said. Both seatpost and rear axle area mounts are feasible,
but you seem concerned about the strength of the arm or the loads.
That's not a design issue so much as a tongue-weight issue.

If you keep the tongue weight to a reasonable value (usually you want it
to be mildly positive; I'd guess 10-20 pounds when heavily loaded,
depending on your mounting system), the loads on the trailer tongue are
going to be very low, and within the limits of a great number of
reasonable materials you might use.
