Good question. IMO, the platform is of dubious value. I just bought some
Candy SLs and I wish I had just got regular Eggbeaters. Before spending
an hour or two carving down the soles on my shoes, they were damn near
impossible to get in and out of. The platform does allow for some
awkward pedaling unclipped, but if your foot is where it should be you
will tend to clip in whether you want to or not. If it isn't where it
should be, then you aren't going to have much control over your bike.

Most of our bikes (all but one road bike and the two folders) use the
Shimanos that have a platform on one side and clip on the other (IIRC
they were 323s, but not positive and they probably have changed
anyway). For the reasons you gave, they seemed to make more sense. I
gambled on a clip and platform combination once, and the pressure it
took to clip was noticeable throughout the ride - like you were
pushing through the platform to get to the clip (and they were big,
ugly red things too). Never again.

I had a pair of Wellgo pedals like that once. Trying to find the right
side all the time drove me crazy. I stuck with BMX style platforms for
years, but this season I am forcing myself to get used to clipless. The
clipless mechanisms all have their own personalities. The best I have
found so far is the Speedplay Frog. Clipping in is reasonably easy, and
they are by far the best for getting out I have experienced so far. No
spring tension to fight, just flick your foot and you are out.

I thought that might be the case. As it happens I went for the cageless
M520s. I'll see how I go with them.
