I've always found "the middle ground" to be a good starting point in any type
of negotiation. Sometimes it yields results and other times it doesn't. When it
doesn't you can always escalate incrementally right up to and including the,
"I'll call the newspapers, my congressman, and my lawyer", level but if you
start there you're basically screwed if the people you are negotiating with
decide to dig in their heels.

I've always found "the middle ground" to be a good starting point in any type
of negotiation. Sometimes it yields results and other times it doesn't. When it
doesn't you can always escalate incrementally right up to and including the,
"I'll call the newspapers, my congressman, and my lawyer", level but if you
start there you're basically screwed if the people you are negotiating with
decide to dig in their heels.

I've always thought it is best to try and figure out the other person's side
of the story or what they expect. In this particular case, while they knew
they had done something wrong, they probably didn't see it as a case of a
premeditated trap for a cyclist (as it wasn't, most likely).
