Flat vs Curved/Riser bar on MTB

I've noticed the prevalence of these curved bars on most new MTBs instead of
flat bars--which was on the bike i bought, btw.

What is the reason for this? I would think it creates a more upright
position and reduce pain in the wrist/forearm area... but I've been on some
15-30 mile rides and haven't experienced any discomfort. As far as handling
alone goes I like the feel of my flat bar bike over all the other bikes I
test rode with the curved bars

Some bikes were never designed to use a riser bar, your bike is probably
one of them.
