Extending cleat channels

Hi,

I have a pair of 1997 or 98 Nike Yuha MTB shoes. The shoes are
designed for SPD-style cleats. Currently, I have my cleats set as far
towards the back of the shoe that the two cleat "channels" will allow.
I am wondering if I can extend the cleat channels (by filing the ends
of the channels) so that I can move the cleats farther back. The
maximum distance I can move the cleats back is 3/8 inch. Would
extending the cleat channels cause any significant compromise to the
strength of the shoe?

Thanks
