Paris-Nice OLN Sunday

Pleasantly surprised to note that OLN devotes 90 minutes to this race on
Sunday; had it figured for the 60 minutes they usually give to triathlons,
etc.

Bicycle Racing
Outdoor Life Network Mar 06 05:00pm
Series/Sports, 90 Mins.
"2005 Paris Nice"

Repeated, the 12th and 13th.

Re: Paris-Nice OLN Sunday

Do any networks carry televised moutain biking events? I haven't seen
OLN in a while, but I seem to remember they only carried road events.
I think mountain biking would be more exciting.

Surprisingly, it (mtb-ing) doesn't televise very well; terrain is flattened
out (both in terms of pitch AND technical...er, ness). Best example was the
Olympics -- BORING.

They (OLN, ESPN, etc.) did try showing some "dual slalom" stuff, but it was
more like BMX/Snowboarding or something and not what I consider true
mountain biking. Also pretty boring, IMO.

I looked for anything similar on cable TV, but could not find it. OLN
doesn't appear to be offered in our metro area.

Not to complain too much, but out of 90 minutes we only got about 40
minutes of -actual- cycling. I started recording and we'd passed 10 minutes
and only barely glimpsed a bicycle, dammit.

The rest was taken up by more journalistic pieces, Bobke acting a-fool, and
on-screen commercials for other OLN shows. Yeah, commercials -during- the
actual racebroadcast with a billboard taking up the screen. Since a show
only is allowed 15 min per hour of commercials, it's a way, besides the
annoying screen pop-ups, to pack in more commercials.

Oh and occasionally they had some cycling. But get this...they had a camera
stationed on a building far above the course and the camera tracks the
riders. Trouble is, they had long stretches of the course being obscured by
rooftops, but the camera kept tracking. It actually gave me a touch of
vertigo and nausea, because the building tops were in close focus - the
rider was so small in this view you couldn't tell what it was - it looked
like a person doing something, maybe riding a motorcycle or something.

And to top it off. Phil was not there, still being in South Africa for
something...we had Paul, and Bob Roll mispronouncing all the French place
names. ;-)

Maybe they'll do better for the rest of the race, being continued on Sat
and Sun...wouldn't be hard to top this broadcast, believe me. You didn't
miss much.
