Walking a heavily loaded touring or utility bike up a
really steep hill can be just as bad or worse than
riding it in a low granny gear at sub-walking speed --
and /that/ can be pretty rough, especially if the
extra weight isn't loaded low enough on the bike
(for example, with most of the weight on top of the
rack(s) instead of down in low-slung panniers) while
going up that steep hill.

There's a certain degree of steepness where the effort
of just keeping the front wheel of a top/rear-heavy bike
down, while trying to keep going forward at all, is just
too much.

Hauling such a top-heavy bike uphill involves alternating
between pushing it from behind, and pulling it from up front.
It doesn't make it easier, it just rests some muscles while
putting others to work.

cheers,
Tom
