What's the coldest weather you've rode in?

Well I've never rode in the snow, and that's only because I don't have
studded tires for my Breezer. For me, the coldest temp that I've rode
in was somewhere in the low twenties. And that was cold enough for me.

Below zero, the insides of my glasses ice up immediatly preventing any
thoughts of outdoor riding. A Colorado winter trip confirmed that.
Temperatures above that just require different clothing options. Wind
can be a factor.

My coldest bike experience is also from Chicago. -5F (-20C). Up along
LSD with a cold wet wind off the lake. Brr!

I live in Norway now and I just got back from a 4 hour ride in sunny 8C
(46F). Go figure.

A few winters ago, I found myself cycling to and/or from work in
temperatures of -20 Fahrenheit. Not something I'd care to do too often,
but certainly no worse than scraping ice off of car windows and getting
a cold car started and warmed up at those temperatures.

I should point out that the relative humidity here in Colorado tends to
be on the low side, which makes low temperatures distinctly more tolerable.

What's the coldest weather you've rode in?

I spent the winter of 2004/2005 living on a boat in Boston Harbor with
my only transportation being the T & my bikes. We had that record
"cold snap" that year, shutting down schools and such. I believe it was
single digit temps, lows in the early negatives, and they calculated
-20F with the wind. I wasn't logging any 100K joyrides, but I did
still ride every day for fun, food & supplies. The only time I used
the T for my 85 mile round trip work commute. I swear it must have
been 10 degrees colder on the docks and in the navy yard without all
the buildings, cars & people surrounding. It may not seem cold to a
someone raised in a really cold climate, but it seems plenty cold to a
New Englander like myself.

Short Answer: somewhere around 0.

-30F in Marquette Michigan on shores Lake Superior. At that temp the
roads are hard as a rock and it feels like summer pavement. But the
toes and hands hurt no matter what you wear. I stay toasty in a down
parka that has most of the feathers leaked out from 30 years use and am
almost too warm except for the hands and feet. It's fun in a screwed up
sort of way.

Lately it's been the weather in California. 20's in the AM and high 40's
in the PM. Very 'un-California' like. No ice, but colder than snot for
this state. As a kid in Illinois I did it sometimes, but there the ice
and snow were limiting factors for a kid with no spikes.

How far? I have found out from this California cold that even at 30F my
body can be sweating from riding and my hands are cold even with gloves
and my feet never really warm up that much either. At -30F it could only
be worse.

It's not the cold that gets ya. it's the ice.
