High Speed crash barely fazes Mighty Jim

Jim Muellner rolled his trike on a fast downhill and yet he spends more
of his report time talking about the great camp site feasts that Chris
and Bryon cooked up for the three of them! Wow, could this serve as
testimony to the safety of a trike? Being so low to the ground, instead
of getting launched by the bump he hit, he rolled his machine and was
able to survey the damage, lick his wounds and keep riding! As well, do
take note of the sense of humor he applies to this situation - his
legendary stature continues to grow.

Following Jim's reports, Chris adds his account. He and Bryon, are as
well, a couple of great guys, WoW:

Wow, what a treat to eat in camp

Hi You All:

It was a long day of riding, but Chris said we could not stop at any of
the unexpected restaurants we found as his paniers were heavy from the
meal he and Bryon had planned for us.

During the day Bryon had a few more flats, so when we got to the
general store in Altamont we asked if they had tubes which of course
they did -- those heavy duty ones that weigh five pounds each. We got
two for Flat Tire Bryon. Hopefully this will be the end of flats.

We found another spot by a creek and set up camp. A brisk bath and hair
washing made the pasta dinner that followed a real treat. Amy, Bryon's
wife joined us at camp and brought along some beer -- what a sweetheart
-- we were three thirsty guys. Pasqual, their five year old daughter
took me for and exploratory walk around camp before turning in for the
night. Food never tastes as good as when cooked at a camp site.

This morning Bryon cooked pancakes and bacon. What a team these guys
are. We are having a great ride.

This morning as we cycled through this rare green valley that I find
myself pedaling through, I feel like I am going past the worlds
largest real life painting. Of course it fills the imaginary canvas I
see as it stretches from the lower left corner to the upper right
corner. We are crossing the last mountain range before Park City.

Jeffery and Jason (the famous Reser brothers who he rode with from
Chicago to Des Moines, ed), thanks a million for those tire liners. It
is wonderful not to have had a flat for all these miles.

I am writing this sitting near the top of a mountain. The views are
spectacular. The jagged rocks of various colors surrounded by
unimaginable hues of green. You can almost see the hairy mammoth that
once roamed these lands walking over some of the rocks we are viewing.
It has to be fascinating to study the various animals of the past.

Well I better get going or they will send out a search party.
Love to all, Jim

Hi Everyone:

Chris got us off Hwy 40 because it was so busy. In a short time we were
rolling along a plateau that allowed you to see in every direction. We
were riding down some pretty long and fast down hills when I hit a
repair lump on the road and rolled my trike at about 25 to 30 mph.
Broke my mirror, the handle on my umbrella, got a few skid marks on my
elbow, wrist and ankle and my pride was hurt. But other than that
everything was okay. Chris helped me put on a few bandages, but they
flew off on the next down hill.

The morning Dr. Bryon came over with a medical kit to redress my
wounds. I asked him what his credential were. He said he knew a couple
doctors, so I told that was good enough for me.

We camped near a little stream on the land of someone who was
remodeling an old cabin. Lots of insects so we did not spend much time
outside before crawling into our tents.

Poor Bryon has had eight flats and never loses his cool. Chris and I
told him by now we would have thrown the whole wheel away. I am
impressed with him.

There are lots of horses standing tail to nose keeping the flies off
each other. The dirt here has a powder like texture to it so every time
they move their feet it creates dust.

The prairie dogs keep us company and stand on their hind legs and shout
'here they come'. At least that is what it looks like.

The heat is getting to me, so I am pretty slow, but we are getting the
job done.

Its cooking in camp tonight, so I am anxious to see what they bought
for us. Its a treat for me from the boys.

Nice guys, see ya later, Jim

Today was pretty eventful. After Jim broke a weld on his seat, he was
actually able to find a weld shop open in Vernal on Sunday. He got a
piece of angle iron cut to fit and then attached it with zip ties.
Bryon, meanwhile, starting snapping spokes like toothpicks. 5 broken
in all today on the rear wheel.

We took 121 out of Vernal instead of staying on 40. Much better - no
more rumble strips, fewer trucks and less traffic. Spent the night in
a cow pasture.

I think Bryon set a record on Monday for greatest number of flats in a
day. I lost track. Fortunately in Altamont we found some puncture
resistant tubes for him.

Today, Tuesday, we made it over Wolf Creek Peak and are on our way into
Park City, on schedule to arrive in Salt Lake City tomorrow. We have
had nothing but sunny weather so far. Nice riding.

Chris
