Re: Denver: where to locate

>That's perfect. You hear that Denver? Smart-ass old man got you pegged.

I am absolutely convinced that on this and most USENET groups, that if someone
wrote

"Good Morning"

that it would not be long before someone wrote back

"Good", "What do you mean, 'Good?"

"Good for whom. Not for me. I haven't had a "good" morning for along time,
and I resent your forcing your opinions on me."

Someone else would join in stating, "This is not the place to share "good"
feelings, this is a bicycle news group, and besides you top posted.

And on and on, until there were 60 or more posts, all headed different
directions ad infinitum.

So, I refuse to get bogged down in this "Denver" stuff.

I have corresponded privately with the inquirer and offered my further views.

And,. Mr. Durbin, things have changed a bit in 17 years. However, if you
didn't like the place, I am glad you are now in Tallahassee where things are
likely better for you.

And, with that I end my posting on this topic.

GOOD day!! )

Good?!
What do you mean, 'Good'?
Good for whom. Not for me. I haven't had a "good" morning for
along time, and I resent your forcing your opinions on me.

This is a bicycle newsgroup, not a usenet-complaint newsgroup.
Besides, you're a .sig advertiser!

quincy to parker to leetsdale.

you can truck pretty much the whole way & you don't "hit" (you do go through)
a lot of stoplights. my average speed on the road is higher and it's less
miles. plus, less flats from goat-head thorns.

quincy is a nightmare ('specially past himalaya towards e470), parker is ok
(nice shoulders, one bad lane cross at I-225) and leetsdale is allright but
can get bad near rush-hour. my memory lags a bit towards downtown but there
are sections where the signs direct you onto the trail and off the road.

whatever, that's not really my point.

paths suck.

denver scares me 'cause i see the rest of the country following suit. IMHO
we should be putting our energy towards riding on streets not creating an
entirely separate system. congrats denver, you have put your energy very
effectively into entirely the wrong direction.

Look in the rectangle defined by "Yale" (on the north),
"Tamarac"/"Quebec" (on the west), "Havana" (on the east) and "225" (on
the south). This is a nice neighborhood that is near/in the cherry
creek school system, is near aurora but not in aurora, near downtown
denver but not in downtown denver and has quick access to the cherry
creek trail which directly or via connections can take you anywhere in
the denver metro area.

Re: Denver: where to locate

Thanks for the replies. The trail info. is good, but I am mainly interested
in road riding. It sounds like there's good riding to the west of the city.
Should I try to locate on the west side or is it easy enough to get over
there via roads and/or trails from the north or south of the city?

Thanks again.

Re: Denver: where to locate

you mentioned you're wife is working in aurora - hence i would try to live in
south aurora, south denver, or southeast denver.

denver's a big enough city that commute time should be taken into account. if
your wife is driving to aurora i would NOT want to drive from north side or
west side of denver to aurora - which is on the east side. - you'll give her
an extra hour of her life every day not spent in her car.

if you like older/more dense neighborhoods check out south of
downtown/washington park- but much more expensive.

if you want suburbs i would look at south aurora and SE denver - and it gets
more expensive as you move NW towards downtown.

i've been biking a lot in southeast denver - many wide side streets that
parallel major arteries make for good street riding - and denver's streets are
easy grid style - in most neigborhoods.

if i had to make a list of neighborhoods to live in which still put me within
30 minutes drive of aurora, but not taking into account costs - i'd choose:

capital hill/governors park - where i currently live
washington park
university of denver area
southeast denver/yale, hampden area

each one gets closer to aurora going in a SE direction

are you coming out here to scout out areas? i'd spend a few days cruising
around these areas. if it's nice you can rent a bike somewhere and check out
the streets and trails

Re: Denver: where to locate

was going to mention too denver is like lots of other medium/large cities

the farther out to the burbs you go the more affordable it is - but the less
character and originality the homes and neighborhoods have. if you don't mind
master planned communities and houses close together highlands ranch or smokey
hill area is great - but these areas are still fairly bike friendly - just stay
off the the main arterials.

good luck with the search

Parker is quite close to newer parts of Aurora via E470. In fact, my
brother-in-law lives in aurora, and it is just 3 miles away.

Re: Denver: where to locate

Bob,

Here is a link for BikeDenver, a local bike advocacy group. I was going to
include more links but they link to a bunch of other sites so you should
have some things to look at.
[Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

There is also a long standing touring(?) and ride oriented group that could
be of help. They have always put out a great map of the area, with paths
and recommended routes.

Hope it helps!

Bob

Ouch. That sounds like a truly awful ride. No wonder you think Denver is such a
bad place to ride a bike. Actually, to be honest, it would be difficult to come
up with a worse cycling route into downtown from there.

It's an interesting debate. Personally, I find the fully-separated paths of
Denver to be very useful tools. The real payoff of the Cherry Creek path comes
closer to downtown, where it passes under Cherry and Colorado, and then, with a
series of blind corners that would make Forester totally freak out, under
University. That tunnel under Colorado is pure gold. But there is unlikely to
be any additional building of paths--or wide curb lanes--for a while because
there is no money for it. I did notice some new painted lanes downtown, serving
no clear purpose.

Robert
