My club scheduled a ride today (Tuesday) as apparently a lot of folks had the
day off. I didn't, so I took a half day of vacation to do the morning ride on
a pretty nice Southern California day.
It was 8:15 AM. The bike was in the car. I was in full cycling gear, and had
the key in my hand, ready to lock the car. Then I noticed that there was a
message on the answering machine, so I went to check it.
It was from the previous day: my dentist calling to remind me of the 9 AM
appointment TODAY to have two crowns installed. Yeah, the appointment that I
set up a couple months ago, and when they asked me how soon I wanted it, I had
said "in a couple months" because neither tooth is bothering me.
So I've just squandered a half day of vacation to not ride and to have my
mouth ripped open at the tooth butcher.
Just call me "sore" in two different ways.

That bites, and that's the tooth, the whole tooth, and nothing but the
tooth.
There's a number of people who have no access to dental care, who
may have been able to ride yesterday. Their teeth may decay and become
abcessed. If they're lucky, they may find a way to have them pulled
before their systems turn septic.
Think about how bad your situation could become if you hadn't been so
fortunate as to have your teeth crowned. Who is it that needs sympathy?
Steve: You have a point but... I think we can still cut the guy a bit of
slack. As for being fortunate to have teeth crowned, that goes along with
one of the "big lies" in dentistry. Or maybe it's an omission. The fact
that fillings aren't permanent isn't something you're told when you're
getting them, and then, later in life, you end up with a mouthful of crowned
tooth as each one goes in succession.
But for this particular discussion, I think we can separate the ills of our
health care system from this guy having to visit the dentist on a day he'd
rather ride. It's little different from having sympathy for somebody on
April 15th... at least there's an implication of having made money to have
to pay taxes.

Were you told that crowns aren't permanent either? I hope you were, because
they aren't.

Thank you...I really don't think I would have died from sepsis 10 miles into
the ride.
At least the burning smell from having the two teeth ground away dissipated
within 36 hours.

No wonder some of my best customers are dentists!
And to that, I really wouldn't know whether to add :>) or :<(
