Road Cycling in LA?

I'll be in Santa Monica next week and was wondering about any road cycling routes or good road cycling shops where I could rent a ride? Whats the scene like out there?

I recently read an article in the paper on Ride Your Bike To Work day. LA has a dismal bicycle plan.

Plenty of people ride on the street. There are plenty of not too strenuous routes, like the strand right there in SM. I'm sure there are bike rental shops in SM as well as elsewhere.

There are also bike riding clubs. Maybe you could tag along with them while you're here.

I used to Cycle-Commute between Hermosa Beach to Santa Monica(Using the Strand).
Great ride! and the view is always different(Especially the transition between Marina del Ray and Venice).

Always felt intimidated on Major roads, but there are some good routes out there if you are prepared to spend the time finding them!

Biking is always really good along the beach so yeah Santa Monica and Venice but also down in like Silverlake and Echo Park. there's like some blossoming communtiies down there that all dig biking.
