Re: Almost Ready to give up Commuting - NOT!

I follwed the Consensus and got BOTH the Mr. Tuffy and thr Trek Branded Triple Puncture protection with Kevlar Mesh.

I would have preferred the Conti but since he wasn't charging labor and gave me Half off on the Tires he had in stock, I took what he had.

THANKS!!! for the Advice (16.4 miles in to work today and counting with Noflats)

I use a combination of kevlar lined tires, and extra liner and "thorn
resistant" tubes - thinner tubes can be and have benn for me cut by the
liner. This combination has cut my flats dramatically. You're still
vulnerable to stem failures and pinch flats, but punctures are about as
close to eliminated as you can get.

Just curious why you guys have to go to such extremes to avoid
flats. Okay, I can understand some areas have thorns but flats IME
are from low air pressure & worn out tires. Very occasionally
glass or other road hazzards manage to puncture a tire. But of
course weighing 230-265lbs I ride 700x25, 28 or currently 700x37
Conti TT 2000 & 26x1.5 Specialized Nimbus. Yes that's heavy
rubber, but what you guys are using doesn't exactly sound light.
Would you expect your tire, liner, heavy tube set up to be faster
than my bigger tires?

Doug
For email, a sense of wonder.

Re: Almost Ready to give up Commuting - NOT!

I typically go 8 months without a single flat, then in 10 days get 8 flats.
You did your flat karma, you won't be needing special tires and liners.

I've flatted on brand-new Kevlar-banded 120psi tyres. I never run at
less than 90psi. Thorns, bits of flint, glass, nails, potholes - all
sorts. The p*nct*re fairly lurks beneath every bush during hedge
cutting season.

Hmm yup racing tires seem prone to flats when used for commuting.
At least the 120 psi 20" ones do ;p Other than that, I haven't had
a flat since... was it 1996?

A little rougher ride, but no air to lose.
