Trying to think of good stuff about winter

Right now, we're in the middle of an arctic freeze- temp is supposed to be
-20C tomorrow. For a HIGH!

So I try to think of the POSITIVE things about winter.

- you sleep better at night than you do in the summer heat! And you have
more energy as a result.

- don't have to shave your legs as often (I still shave though, being a
girl, and I still wear shorts at the gym).

- you can avoid talking to people you don't like or who bore you, when you
see them on the street. "Sorry, but it's freezing, gotta go!" Better yet,
you can walk right past them and they don't know it's you, since your face
is all covered up!

- It's nice not to give a rat's ass how you look when you go outside.
Since everyone looks like Admiral Peary, you know you don't look any more
dopey than anyone else. Like your hair could be a mess or whatever, and
it's all covered up so no one sees!

- chill beer, wine or soft drinks in minutes by leaving them in the shed!
Great for parties and makes space in the fridge.

- and of course makes you appreciate summer even more.

You listed some good ones.

There are also: no stingy flying bugs, and not waking up
with the sun glaring in your eyes at 5:30 AM.

cheers,
Tom

Just think of it as nature's subtle hint to do some cross training.
I went ski touring last week. My left ankle's still swollen, and my
left hip is popping like Rice Crispies. But what a great aerobic
workout, not to mention great scenery:

A nice bike ride when the road opens in June.

Yes, that's true- if you get up in the wee hours and can't sleep, you
don't have to worry that it'll be light soon, so it's easier to get back
to sleep. ALthough I have one of those sleep masks, since I have trouble
sleeping with light in the room.

I also thought of another- not getting lots of sweat zits, like the ones
you get near your hairline.

Indeed, if you're cold, you can add more layers of clothing; but if
you're hot, you're probably already down to the minimum you can
wear.

I sure wish I could find well ventilated, uninsulated footwear. I'm
tired of wearing sandals in the snow. Are everybody's feet so cold
that their shoes need to insulate even when they're already wearing
socks? Even in the summer?

Most of that is intended as cushioning rather than insulation, but it
certainly has the effect of insulation. Try Converse All Stars
sneakers; they're just plain canvas sneakers, with no padding.

Does anybody need cushioning on the upper (the sides and top)?

Thanks, I'll check 'em out; I actually found some sneakers that are
made entirely of thin mesh, such that light actually filter through,
and they're better (though sandals still feel better at reasonable
air temperatures). However, I must find something rugged for work --
boots, or at least boot-styled sneakers with rough terrain tread.

I've gotten SPD sandals for bicycling, so I'm all set with that.

marlene i'm gonna be frank: you're screwing with the kharmic balance. winter
(montreal and minnesota style) sucks. it's bitterly cold, there's no daylight
and it greatly limits your ability to have fun outside. but i've never
lived anywhere where people enjoy spring as much as i have in minnesota (and
i'd hope montreal).

if you keep finding reasons why winter is so happy fun it's gonna cut into
that and the next thing you know it'll be like san diego: spring will be
a blip hardly noticed.

learn to love the pain that is winter for what it is.

walk outside into -40C and say, "ahhhh, my god this sucks. 67 days 'til
spring!"

winter is like bicycle foreplay. ya need it.

poor damn san diego folk.

Nuh-uh. One doesn't have to be a flaggelant about it.

When life serves up lemons, make a bunch of Tom Collins.

Maybe convert a trainer into a pedal-powered blender to
make 'em with.

cheers,
Tom
