Will I be slower on a single-speed bike?

I'm thinking of buying a Specialized Langster single gear bike. But, will the fixed gear be much lower than the top gear on my current bike (21-speed GT Zum 2006). At the moment I ride pretty much all the time on my top gear, which is why I want a single speed.... but will I be sacrficing speed?
