It is better to ride with traffic because it is the law. The law treats bicycles as any other vehicle when it comes to rules of the road. You wouldn't drive east bound in the west bound lane in a car would you?

As stated you can be seen for a longer period of time from behind. There is less closing speed from behind.

This is a no-brainer. You have to ride going with the traffic, drivers from behind usually are able to see you sooner and there is a much smaller risk of an accident.

You don't say which country you are from. Unless there is a specific cycle path, I believe that it is illegal to cycle the 'wrong way' down a street. Near me, there are a couple of roads where it is legal. The street is one way, but drivers are warned by signs that cyclists may be coming from the opposite direction. As a cyclist, you should always follow the rules of the road (yes, even stopping at red traffic lights) As a car driver, I recommend that any cyclist (wherever you are) wears bright clothing that reflects light. There is nothing more scary than a cyclist wearing black, cycling in the dark! You can never have too much dayglo! When I cycle at night, I have not had many problems at all (even in the centre of London) as drivers can see me coming a mile off!
Be Safe - Be Seen.
