As anybody put a 52/40/30 chain set and 11/26 cassette on a mountain bike with...

...slick tyres? I want a tough frame for my daily commute to and from work, I currently use a racer with flat handle bars but I can't take any short cuts to shorten my commute because given a racer that sort of abuse may damage the frame or the wheels. So I've been thinking about buying a mountain with rigid forks then upgrading and transferring some parts from the racer on to the mountain bike to give it road performance and having a slightly tougher frame and wheels to take abuse on the short cuts. Anybody out there done this to a mountain bike and can you keep up with the roadies and what slick tyre should I go for.

Keep up with the roadies? I don't know how good a rider on the road you are. I can keep up on my hybrid, but it has 700 x 25's slicks on it ( and I am a roadie myself ).

Ok your bike. You don't need to change the gearing on it. You have ample high gears to do the job. Yes, I do agree to change the tires. You may or may not find true slicks to fit your rim size, as you didn't state what your wheels are. You can find some good road rubber for dang near any rim size.

Here is but one of many reference links:

Know your wheel and tire size. Start looking in city/touring tires.
If you need more info on what fits your wheel consult the beard:

Have fun with your commute!
