Try the Trek 820, or the 3700. The former is good old steel, which is less harsh feeling on bumps, the latter is aluminum, which is lighter but feels rigid and harsh on bumps.

If you have a Performance Bike Shop near you, they have a number of bikes at your price level. Since they are a chain, the quality of the staff will vary but I've had pretty good luck with the ones in Southern California.

get the cheapest giant you can find. you could probably find it for $350-$400. that is the best bike for the money

Rather than supply you with a brand I recommend you shop around at all your local bike shops--right now! And look for a clearance model left over from 2007.

I think you will likely get a better deal on a clearance model than buying used. One problem with buying a used mountain bike is the risk that it may have been subjected to severe abuse.

I was just in a bike shop the other day that had some Specialized and Gary Fisher mountain bikes marked way down. Can't remember the exact prices or makes right now, but remember one was originally priced at $399 marked down to $205!

Visit as many bike shops as you possibly can. This is is a good time (January) to shop for a good deal.

Jamis, KHS, and maybe Haro tend to have rigs with well speced and way cheap rigs.

For 300 bucks you could probably find a better 2nd hand machine.
