Those bikes can be really fast. It all depends on the steepness of the mountain. You say you have a weight problem...that combined with a steep hill...man you could really get going.
Please start slowly. Work into it. The worst thing you can do is make yourself sore from too much activity and then going in to a physical work out too hard. You will hurt too much and quit all together. All things in moderation.

Try a few weekend rides first. And do as others have suggested. Tuesday Thursday, Then Tuesday, Thursday Friday for a couple of weeks. Then throw in a Monday. Last, add the mid week Wednesday to the equation.

Scope your route. May be able to throw in a short cut or two.

Buy quality equipment. Fity kms a day will root cheap equipment under a large man quickly and cost you more to replace than a quality ride first up.

And Carlos, I think he will be able to manage a but more than 20kph! But . . . a mountain bike is really not the best tool for the job. Dude, visit a bike shop, talk to real people, test ride a bike or two.

50Km is a long way. I think you should gradually work yourself up to it, and perhaps do a practise run first at the weekend or something.

In reply to the original question, my grandad would say ' it will only go as fast as you pedal it'?

As to safety, it really depends on how busy the roads are at the times you wish to travel. I really admire what you are doing, let us know how you get on.

andasay, thats very true!!! LOL!!!

I would take it gradually though, perhaps just start off doing it twice a week at first to see how you go to get your gereral fitness levels up. And good for you!

These bikes are really fast.A lot of those calculations depend upon the terrain, your body weight and endurance. So it is difficult to calculate average for each of them.
