How fast can a mountain bicycle go?

I intend to commute 50km to and from work everyday. is it safe for starters? I havent cycled that distance ever before and its been a while since a cycled at all. (9yrs ago) But i have a weight problem and i intend to tackle it this time and at the same time save the money for taking a bus. what is your advice

Those bikes can be really fast. It all depends on the steepness of the mountain. You say you have a weight problem...that combined with a steep hill...man you could really get going.
Please start slowly. Work into it. The worst thing you can do is make yourself sore from too much activity and then going in to a physical work out too hard. You will hurt too much and quit all together. All things in moderation.

Try a few weekend rides first. And do as others have suggested. Tuesday Thursday, Then Tuesday, Thursday Friday for a couple of weeks. Then throw in a Monday. Last, add the mid week Wednesday to the equation.

Scope your route. May be able to throw in a short cut or two.

Buy quality equipment. Fity kms a day will root cheap equipment under a large man quickly and cost you more to replace than a quality ride first up.

And Carlos, I think he will be able to manage a but more than 20kph! But . . . a mountain bike is really not the best tool for the job. Dude, visit a bike shop, talk to real people, test ride a bike or two.
