Depends what you play, if you want to get to work faster leave slightly later in the morning, be realistic about what you want to achieve, also on the way home take a longer route, so you become fitter.

If your bike is a mountain bike and geared as such you can only go so fast before you max out on gears and speed. Hybrids are geared a little faster, but still not that much. Some folks get what they call a beater, a road bike that can take the beating of a daily commute and the problems inherent (flats, bent rims, weather, etc.). Most of the time they will pick an older bike made of steel/chromolly and build it up to take the beating. That way you can go faster without trashing a good bike. If you're commuting an MP3 is a bad idea. You have to have your wits about you and there's a good chance you'll be distracted with the mp3.

Wear the proper cycling kit (wicking fabrics, etc) and travel light!! Carry a change of clothes with you in a small rucksack or leave stuff at work.

Ride faster!! try and beat your personal best at least once a week!

MP3s are a great idea, I use one for training runs.

As time goes on you will get quicker.

EDIT: Play upbeat stuff on your MP3 - you will be wasting your time with a George Michael Ballad.
