bicycle safety

I'm new to riding and would like to learn more about street smarts and
riding safely (mostly with regard to automobiles). I'm aware of John
Forester's 600 page "Effective Cycling", but would like to see something
smaller which distills this info into something much shorter (and perhaps
something more updated??).

Any recommendations for short books, pamphlets, web sites, etc. which would
do this?

Thanks!

Boatman

Not sure how much there is to update on that matter; though EC would
benefit from small updates on some technical points, riding in traffic
is pretty much the same now as it was ten years ago.

As for resources, Allen's Street Smarts is available online at
<http://www.bikexprt.com/streetsmarts/>. Urban Bikers' Tricks & Tips
(ISBN 0-9651728-0-5) also covers riding in traffic, along with many
other useful subjects.

Finally, keep in mind that EC covers much more than EC; sections 29-32
are only about 50 pages long in total. If you ever lay a hand on a
copy, it's certainly worth reading.
