Somec bicycles

My long-term dream has always been a Tek 5XXX, but I have an opportunity
to get a really great deal on a Somec. On paper, or at least via
electrons, they look like pretty good bikes. Anybody know if there is a
model comparable to the Trek, or actually, where I can find out anything
whatsoever about them before I go down and try one? Some info at the URL
below.

This may not be helpful, but I bought one in York, England in 1983 and
it was a wonderful bike. Wiped it out in a crash in 1986. If they
are still in business, it is probably because they continue to make a
nice product. Back in the day, they were made in Italy (Turin?).
Somec was short for "Society Meccanista" or the Italian equivalent of
Society of Mechanics. One distinguishing feature of the frames back
then is that they were entirely chromed under the paint - prevented
rusting (very useful for training through a Scottish winter, where
roads are covered with a liquid mixture of water and sheep crap).
Good luck
