TDF Crowd Math

from Velonews.com today:
"Tour de France officials have announced a crowd estimate of 900,000 lining
the course" along the l'Alpe d'Huez.

Let's see. The course is 15.5km. That works out to 58 people per meter of
road. Figuring people are packed in like sardines (getting half a meter of
width, about 20 inches, each), this would still be 15 people deep, along
both sides of he course, for the entire length of the course. Seems
unlikely.
