Innovations Ultraflate Plus question - Cycling Mob: Road Cycling, Mountain Biking and More

I just picked up this CO2 powered inflater, plus a 12g extra
cartridge. When I put the 12g cartridge in the unit, I can
screw the cup nearly ALL the way together without the
cartridge being pierced. I'm curious if the last <1/8" is
gonna both pierce the cartridge and seal it! The 16g
cartridge that came with the unit is longer and therefore
it's obvious that it will be properly pierced when I screw
the cup on all the way. These cartridges are non-threaded.
The instructions say that they can be used, AND the 12g is
made by Innovations. What am I missing? Is there supposed
to be a spacer for use with the 12g? The instructions don't
mention one. So far it looks pretty IFFY...
