Tandem question: how to ride with small child (6 mos-2 years)?

My wife and I are considering the purchase of a tandem. We're
confident that we'd get along well on the bike.

Question: what do we do with our new baby while riding? We obviously
couldn't take her until she is able to sit up on her own (6 mos?).

I'd prefer an option where we could watch the baby as we rode, so
something between the stoker and captain would be ideal (if such a
thing exists). I guess we could also plan to put her on the back and
rig some mirrors to watch her.

Any suggestions on how others have tackled this issue would be
appreciated. If I've posted this in the wrong forum, my apologies;
there doesn't seem to be a tandem newsgroup.

While every child is different, the number generally kicked around here is
one year.

As far as how to watch the child, I don't have a useful suggestion. I've
not quite been equipped with grandchildren yet (oldest is just talking
marriage now), but I'm inclined to go with a good trailer when the time
comes.
