I have a friend who at 48 years managed to hit over 210 on the heart rate
monitor. Given that his "max" would have been estimated at 172, the figure for
maximum heart rate estimated at 220-age is only an approximation.

A better way to do it is by pseudomeasurement. Ride with a fast group that you
really want to stay with and check your heart rate when they drop you gasping.
Once you have done this a few times, you should have a good idea of your
maximum heart rate. Or you could just go out and note the highest heart rate
you can achieve every now and then. That is about as good a measure as any.

Zoul is right -- it's at best an approximation. There can be a LOT of
individual variation, up to 10% isn't uncommon. My own max heartrate
has always been 20 bpm or so above most prediction formulas, which is
more than 10% variation. I think I've got some hummingbird DNA in there
somewhere...

So, relax, and adjust your HRM until it reflects your current max, and
adjust as needed if you record higher.
