I bought a Trek 7100 for my wife, and it's very nice. Plenty of
room to add a rack and panniers, suspension seatpost, front suspension
forks, too. It's heavier than my road bike, but not by as much as an
X-mart gas pipe bike. For scooting around town or short (< 20 miles?)
commutes, it's just the ticket, IMHO. 7sp rear, triple front. Joy.

I have a Giant Yukon and I'm very pleased with it. I'm 48 and use it
as a road bike in Taiwan. It has a Suntour suspension front fork with
a hardtail frame. There is no trouble and not much added expense,
really. I find that the suspension fork really does do a good job
though and I'm very glad I have it.
