Sensitive knees after wearing armour

I borrowed a set of leg armour with knee protection for a ride a few
months ago. My first time with armour. The track was a tight, rocky
path and I was worried about smashing a leg so I wore them for about
20mins before the pressure they put on my kobbly knees was too much to
suffer. For two weeks after, my kneecaps were very sensitive to any
pressure. They've been OK on all trips since then. From this experience
it seems I'll never be able to wear leg armour for any length of time
unfortunately.

Last week though I was out wearing cold weather tights, very close
fitting around the legs, and now my knees are very sensitive again.
They're not painful, but any pressure on my kneecaps, even from
trousers, is uncomfortable. I have no problems wearing shorts. Can
anyone say if it's common to get this "housemaids knee" from armour, if
that's what it is, and how long it takes to completely clear up?

"Housemaids knee"? I don't even want to conjecture....

Quite possible if the armour was tight enough to constrict your
patella.
