you're a ****ing *******. I NEVER ride my mountain bikes on trails
where bikes are not allowed. NEVER, you arrogant *******. I do not
ride on trails where bikes are not allowed, because there are valid
reasons bikes are not allowed there, and I am intelligent enough and
polite enough to respect that. Good lord, you have a ****ing stick up
your ass. What a ****ing *****. Go **** yourself with your walking
stick, you may get some of that **** in your brain to come out.

Obviously, you are the one that isn't listening. I never stated that

Yes, you did: "While you write that hiking is such a supreme way to
see nature, can you see 70 miles of it in 8 hours?" That implies that
you CAN do that mountain biking. BULL****, because I can see nature
while road riding, asswipe!

Mountain bikers travel approx 6-8 mph uphill, and 14-15 mph downhill.
It is virtually impossible for a mountain biker to cover 70 miles in 8
hours.

No, it isn't. That is just 9 MPH. In a recent 20 mile race, the winner
averaged 13 MPH. Besides, the exact numbers are beside the point.
Mountain bikers still travel several times as far as hikers, making
their impact several times as great. It's a race, dumbass - most mtn
bikers I know are in it for pleasure, not competition.

However, it is well within a road bicyclist's ability to do that, and
take 2 15 minute breaks and 30-60 mintues for lunch within those 8
hours. and one can see nature all over Marin from the road. If you
think averaging 12 -14 mph is too fast to take in nature, you are
simply ignorant or have very poor eyesight.

BS. You have to spend most of your time watching where you are going,
or you will crash. I have ridden a bike longer than you have been
alive. You can't fool me.

I also never referred to you in demeaning terms. I also pointed out to
you that I ride, hike, walk, and drive. I ride approx 3,000 miles per
year. I hike approx 500, and walk prob twice that. I drive approx
4,000. Now, with all of this mileage under me, please explain how I am
dense and dishonest. I have merely called your bluff and in your
stubborn yet ignorant view, you are unwilling to admit that SOME
mountain bikers stay on the trails that are alloted to them, respect
nature,

Impossible. That is not just an ATTITUDE. What you DO also matters.
Mountain biking is inherently harmful to animals, plants, and humans.
You are saying it is impossible to stay on trails alloted to you? You
are a ****ing idiot.

and also respect other persons in the area.

BS. If you did, you wouldn't take your bike on trails, where hikers
and equestrians don't want them. I DON'T RIDE ON TRAILS WHERE BIKES
ARE NOT ALLOWED, YOU ****ING ARROGANT *****.

There are SOME hikers who lump all mtn bikers into one category.

I'm not even talking about mountain bikers, but mountain BIKING.
That's how dense you are.

There are SOME hikers that alos mtn bike. I feel sorry for you, lost
in your ivory tower world, hating everything that civilization offers.
You are full of ****. You don't know anything about me. I just tell
the truth. A truth only known to you, but clearly filled with hate and
lies obvious to anyone not wrppaed in your miniscule world view.

Please tell me this: how do you justify using a computer? Do you know
where the minerals were mined from in the pc's make-up? Do you know
how much the labor was paid in the creation of the pc? You are nothing
more than a hypocrite with a singleminded focus.

Since you question my using a computer, while using a computer, that
makes YOU a hypocrite. QED It does not make me a hypocrite, dumbass,
because I am not claiming the moral high ground or profess to be
speaking for the animals. Go watch Dr. Doolittle and take some acid,
maybe you'll really learn something.

I pity you even more.

Your web page starts out by saying wildlife need habitat off-limits to
humans, then you proceed to focus on mountain biking. Aren't you a
human? Aren't you intruding into the wildlife area to find the damage
done by mountain bikes?

How can you write an article titled Homo Sapiens Place in Nature from
an Objective (Biocentric) Point of View when it is obvious from the
title that biocentrism already colors the "objectivism"? That's like
writng "An Objective View of History", as written by a Communist.

As someone who hikes in China Camp, I've never been afraid of bikers
there, or had an unruly encounter. As a matter of fact, I hike there
with a friend and we bring guitars, find a dope spot, and sit and play
music. By your reading, I would think we would be harming the wildlife
by the noise we create when in actuality we have often seen many birds
and animals wander closer to us than normal, as well as having had
hikers and bikers stop to enjoy the music. As a bicyclist that does
trail riding, I find it amusing that you, like any politician does
with any subject, lumps all bikers into the same category: dangerous,
thrill-seeking persons always willing to ride off trail.

You seem to enjoy the use of the word machine in a negative way when
describing bicycles yet Merriam Webster has one definition of machine
as "a living organism or one of its functional systems". Would you
prefer everyone that rides a bike in China start using automobiles? I
have never encountered such hostility in writing towards the bicycle,
a mode of transportation that greatly reduces greenhouse gases, aids
in exercise, and moves many people fairly quickly in their travels.
While you write that hiking is such a supreme way to see nature, can
you see 70 miles of it in 8 hours?

Maybe if you think about that statement, you will have an insight. If
You can travel 70 miles in 8 hours, but a hiker can only travel, say,
14 miles in 8 hours, then you are doing at least 5 times as much
damage. Besides, you can't really see anything if you travel that
fast. So what would be the point? Mountain bikers are AMAZINGLY dense!
You apparently read some of my papers, but you didn't appear to
understand them. What about [Only registered and activated users can see links. ]

A co-worker recently got a bicycle to ride to work in San Francisco.
He remarked that he had never seen so much of the City from walking or
driving.

You mention that able-bodied people on mountain bikes are too lazy to
walk. Yet while biking up Mt. Montara, I ran into a friend hiking back
down. She said she was just telling her friend how amazing it is that
people ride up the mountain because it is so much more difficult than
hiking up the mountain. But I gather you have never attempted such an
effort so you have no basis for your judgment. Finally, you mention
that "it is well known that on level ground, the bicycle uses less
energy per mile than any other form of transportation, including
walking." Apparently, you've also never ridden a bike at 20 MPH on
level ground.

As someone who hikes, walks, bikes, and drives, I find myself running
into the singlemindedness of your ilk much too often. There is common
ground, and then there is ground that is too common for some.

Maybe if you would LISTEN, you'd understand what we are saying. From
what I've seen, you aren't using your head. All you are doing is
trying to rationalize what is completely unjustifiable. I don't have
much hope, though. Mountain bikers seem pretty stupid (and dishonest)
to me.
