RR: Loud Ride - super short, really. - Cycling Mob: Road Cycling, Mountain Biking and More

SW Idaho's in a moderate cold snap, single digits at night, warms to
around 20 in the heat of the day. So last night's ride was at 4pm, all
strong A-Teamers, (one singlespeeder) so I knew I'd be sweating to keep
up, (so to speak..)

We rode the week-old frozen snow for about 8 miles, and the squeeking
of our tires over the snow was loud and crazy! Sun was bright, traffic
light, with a few runners and dogs. Normally, the riding is either
silent, or the low buzz of rubber on dirt or granite. This stuff was
fun! At the creek crossing, for about the first time in my life I
dismounted and took it easy since I saw where other overconfident saps
had fallen through the ice. No thanks, all the same.

The route down Hulls Gulch was a little icy and tricky, but I think we
all made it without yard-saling. Parker had to show his patented
technique of riding the big staircase, even with it covered in ice. It
was all the rest of us could do to walk down it without biffing it bad.

Very nice.
Squeaky snow is cool. We get a lot of it around here due to cold temps.
Speaking interesting snow, another kind I like is the re-crystallized
surface hoar. We often get that too from cold temps and dry air. I went
for a moonlight ski last full moon and the sparkling reflections were
spectacular! I also love the glass-like sound when you ski through it.
Ah, snow.

It was -20 F this morning, which is actually a bit warmer than it has
been the past few days.

I do kinda miss xc skiing. SoCal is majorly lacking in that
department. Ten again, you need snow to ski.

Yeah, I don't think Pinos has much snow this year, I've wanted to check out
their xc trails.

I was planning on heading to Mammoth this weekend but frickin' have to work
for just an hour on Sunday so I bailed.

It'll need to snow a helluva lot to get me to ski in Winter out here.

Work sucks, but we need the bucks. Maybe it was The Man In The Clouds
telling you to ride your bcycle instead...
