Help me choose a mountain bike!?

I am 31 years old and used to be a fairly avid mountain biker. Now, I'm looking for something that will perform well on the trails, but will also work well for commuting to work on city streets. The trail riding will not be particularly intense.

I am 6'2" and 190. The budget is something under $900. Any recommendations greatly appreciated!
The weight of the bike is a big consideration for me as well--lugging it onto trains, up stairs, etc. will be fairly common.
