Going from a mountain bike to a road bike?

After fairly recently tackling the art of cycling, I'd like to go from a mountain bike to a racer.....but I know my limitations right now & until I'm more confident & "ready" I was thinking about going on to a road bike but with mountain bike handles maybe - what bike would you suggest is a good choice for me?
I cycle about 25 miles plus a day at the moment & it's all on road (London)
Obviously doing those kinds of miles on a mountain bike is holding me back some from increasing my mileage. At the moment I have slicks on my mountain bike, but I do want to change to something (another bike) more suitable to my use, more lightweight & something I can maybe find easier to handle......like less bulky & easier to manouver through traffic.

What would you suggest?

buy it then use the mountain bike for mountain bike occaisons and road bike for road bike occasions. duh.
