I have 400 bucks to spend on a mountain bike. What kind should i buy? Should I buy it online instead of a possible overpriced bike shop?

You may be just on the low range but for starters I would suggest going to a bike shop. They will measure you out and find the right bike for you, and the money you spend there is usually worth it since most will offer a free tune up or two and fittings for a while to come. Online is hard unless you know exactly what make model and size you want, but then it will be hard to find that. Bicycle manufacturers highly support their distributors so most of them will make you come in to buy it, and ebay and such have very limited selection.
