Good news from my public works department

I live in an area of Florida which is experiencing rapid growth. So rapid
that two major roads are undergoing widening from two to four lanes at the
same time. The road I take to work was dangerous before construction, but is
downright suicidal now, so I haven't commuted to work in a year now.
Surprise, surprise---the public works department says there will be a multi
use trail the length of the new road! That will basically be a private road
for me because there are no cyclists where I live. Unfortunately, the finish
date is Dec 2006. :-(
Looks like my little town is joining the modern age!

got news for you... it will be useless for commuting because of
the dog walkers with invisibile retractible leashes, airheads
with headphones on rollerblades, and kids on tricycles. they may
not exist yet, but when the trail is finished they *will*
magically appear.

bikes belong on the road.

Since I live in a primarily retiree community, and the MUT will be in a
primarily rural undeveloped area, it's not going to be a concern. We already
have an excellent trail(Withlacoochee State Trail) and it's mostly
abandoned. I agree that bikes belong on the road, but the thought of not
being sideswiped by construction workers in drywall trucks is very
appealing.

Did you ask the public works department if the improved road will have wide
shoulders or bike lanes? - that's what you really want.
